How it works

How The True Self works.

A calm, step-by-step way to reach the conversations that matter.

The format

Why this works.

The strength of the format is time and privacy. Face to face, there is no room to think and a lot of room to get it wrong.

Here, each person works things out in private first, at their own pace, with a guide to lean on, so that by the time anyone speaks out loud, the hardest part is already done.

A room each, private to the person inside it. A pause at The Threshold when a shared conversation is being considered. And The Clearing, for the conversations that matter most.

Step by step

What happens, in order.

  1. A quiet armchair by a curtained window in early morning light.
    01

    Choose a season.

Choose one, three, six or twelve weeks with Teri, create your profile, and you have A Place to Land of your own. A season ends on a stated date. Nothing renews behind your back.

  2. A parent writing in a notebook at a kitchen table by lamp light, A Place to Land.
    02

Write when life is actually happening.

Write whenever you like, day or night, as much or as little as feels right. There is no correct way to do this. What you write stays private to you, and nobody reads it, including Teri, until you choose to step into The Threshold and share it there.

  3. A circle of wooden chairs in a softly lit hall, The Village.
    03

The Village is open from the beginning.

You are never doing this on your own, even if there is nobody you want to invite. The Village is there from your first day in A Place to Land. Parents and carers sit with other parents and carers, and Teri watches over it closely. In My Room has no Village, so that space stays private writing and conversations with Teri only. Somewhere to share a thought with people who understand.

  4. A young person's bedroom corner with a notebook and headphones on the bed, In My Room.
    04

Connect with someone, if and when it is right.

If there is someone you would like alongside you, an invitation can be sent whenever it feels right, at the very start or much later on. A parent or carer might invite the person they are reaching, who needs to be 18 or over for In My Room, and that person might invite a parent or carer. They set up a private space of their own, In My Room or A Place to Land, chosen by them rather than decided on their behalf. Each space stays private to the person inside it, and there is no need to invite anyone at all.

  5. A partly open interior door with warm light across the floorboards, The Threshold.
    05

    Pause at The Threshold.

The Threshold is where you step into conversation with Teri, one to one, in your own time. Teri reads every word with care and replies on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Readiness for anything shared is considered rather than assumed, and nobody is moved along before they are ready.

  6. Two wooden chairs facing each other in an open grassy clearing at dusk, The Clearing.
    06

    Step out to The Clearing.

When you are both ready, The Clearing is the shared space where two people begin witnessing one another, with Teri holding it. Short openings or longer ones. In your own time.

What Teri does

A steady guide. Never a push.

Teri witnesses rather than advises. She reads every word with care and replies on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. She can leave gentle prompts, share resources into your room, sit with you at The Threshold, and hold The Clearing when you are both there. She takes no side. Every reply is written by Teri herself, in her own words, to you and your situation. No templates, no copying and pasting. She has her own family and her own dynamics to juggle, so when she is away you will see the dates before you share anything.

Privacy in depth

The only door is the one you choose to open.

Each room is private to its owner. A parent or carer cannot read a young person's room, and a young person cannot read theirs. Only Teri can be invited in, and only by the person whose room it is. The Clearing is the only shared space, and everyone there knows who can see it.

A season, not a subscription.

Support is bought in weeks. Every season shows what it costs per week, and the longer seasons cost less per week than the shorter ones.

One week season
£29

£29.00 a week

Three week season
£79

£26.33 a week

Where most parents begin
Six week season
£149

£24.83 a week

Twelve week season
£279

£23.25 a week

Your season ends on a stated date and you are invited to choose again, not charged again. Nothing rolls on by itself, and you can pause whenever you need to. One week is a legitimate amount of help to ask for, and if cost is what stands in the way, write to us and ask about a funded place. There is no form and no means test, and a funded place looks and feels exactly like any other.

Twenty places at a time

Teri holds twenty places so that everybody is properly heard. When all twenty are taken, you can put your name down instead of paying, and we write to you the moment a place opens. Names are taken in order, and an offer is held for a fortnight so you have time to decide. Nobody is turned away, and you can come off the list at any time with one click.

Somewhere safe enough for truth.
