I do not really know how to start this, so I will just say it. My daughter is sixteen and I think she has stopped liking me. Not in the way people say it about teenagers, as a joke. Properly.
She comes in, she goes upstairs, and the door closes. If I ask about her day I get one word. If I ask twice I get the sigh. Last Thursday I asked whether she had eaten and she said, why do you always do this, and I stood on the landing afterwards feeling about ten years old.
What I have not said to anyone is that some evenings I am relieved when she goes up. That is the bit I cannot get past. I am relieved, and then I feel sick about being relieved, and then I try harder the next day and it comes out wrong and we are back to the landing.
I do not want a technique. I have read the articles. I think I want to know whether this is recoverable, and whether I have already done the damage.
